MDA Information Systems LLC has an immediate opening for a Data  Scientist in our Gaithersburg, MD. location. This position applies techniques and theories from math, statistics, data engineering, visualization, and high performance computing with the goal of extracting meaningful data to address complex problems.  We are looking for someone who has the creativity and the analytical skills to really do something new, unique, and exciting.  This position will involve a focus on the handling and processing of large data sets that are specific to weather and image processing.  If you have a passion for the atmospheric sciences and the geospatial sciences plus the background to handle complex analytics, we have an exciting opportunity for you to really do something great!

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

  • Design and develop advanced algorithms for the purpose of analyzing large amounts of data, from disparate sources.
  • Discover and communicate meaningful patterns from large data sets.
  • Employ elements of artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics, and database systems to develop analytic methodologies.
  • The desire to do something great and change the way the world looks at, consumes, and uses data.
  • Work with the sales, operations, and management team to develop new tools and systems for the purpose of creating value add solutions for both internal and external customers.

 

 

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Experience employing a variety of programming/development languages (including Python, Perl, C/C++, Ruby, Javascript) to devise analytic solutions to problems
  • Experience developing in a Linux environment
  • Experience performing data analysis and visualization using tools such as such as R, NCL, IDL, GrADS, MATLAB
  • Experience with conventional GIS software, such as ESRI and Imagine, as well as tools from the OpenGeo community (QGIS, GeoServer, for example).
  • Experience running mathematical/analytical simulations
  • Background in Differential Geometry, Statistics, Abstract Algebra, Linear Algebra, Multivariate Calculus, and Experimental Methods
  • Degree in math, physical science or computer science or equivalent

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with atmospheric model data formats such as grib and/or netcdf
  • Experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL databases
  • Experience working with GIS datasets and satellite imagery data
  • Experience with the collection, management, and analysis of social media data from various sources
  • Experience working with customers to understand their needs and with programmers to implement designs
  • Experience developing web and desktop GUI visualization interfaces
  • Experience working with scientific elements (labs, etc.) dealing with large data sets
  • Record of scientific work: contribution to published papers, successful development of data analysis techniques or forecast products
